About the Workshop
The Grabar Art Conservation Centre's first began restoring ceramics in 1946. The workshop performs conservation and preservation works on all kinds of ceramic and glass artwork. Ceramics of all types are restored by the workshop's experts: pottery, majolica, porcelain, biscuit porcelain, delftware, archaeological ceramics, as well as items made from archaeological and historical glass.
In addition to their restoration activities, the experts at the workshop also carry out research and experimental work, and appraisals of works of art. The extensive work of the department's restorers has been collected and published in a single methodological tome entitled Restoring Museum Ceramics, the only work of its kind in Russia.
The methodology employed to restore ceramics that has been developed by the workshop's experts places specific focus on studying, testing and use of materials.
More than 60 works of art are restored annually
Every year, the workshop's dedicated experts restore dozens of exhibits from leading Russian and international museums: the Old Masters Gallery, the Kremlin Museums, the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, The State Museum of Oriental Art, the Museum-Reserve Tsaritsyno, the Kizhi State Open-Air Museum of History, Architecture and Ethnography, etc.

The Centre has been restoring ceramics for almost 70 years
The ceramics restoration workshop (previously department) was opened in 1946. Since its creation, one of the workshops main goals has been to study and implement the basic principles and techniques of restoring ceramic objects using modern materials of the highest quality.

The Restorers
Since 2010, the ceramics restoration workshop has been run by Yekaterina Sharkova, restorer of the highest class. A total of six art restorers and one researcher are employed by the workshop. Two of the workshop's staff are restorers of the highest class.
Scientific Research
Сотрудники отдела занимаются научной деятельностью, участвуют в конференциях в России и за рубежом. В реставрации важен индивидуальный подход к экспонату. Часто при попытке решить частную задачу рождаются идеи, проводятся исследования, которые потом преобразуются в методики, которые специалисты начинают использовать регулярно. Огромный опыт работы с предметами, сделанными во всех возможных техниках различных видов керамики, методично систематизируется и периодически выходит в виде публикаций в печатных сериях ВХНРЦ. В результате огромный опыт реставраторов был обобщен и изложен в единственной в стране фундаментальной методики «Реставрация музейной керамики» (1999).

Another aspect of the workshop's activities is the ongoing and meticulous training of interns and apprentices, many of whom are students in faculties of restoration at Russian universities or employees at the restoration workshops of the Tretyakov Gallery, the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, the State Hermitage Museum and other museums.
